Final steps to complete the installation!

If you are upgrading to a new version of Spacilus, you can safely ignore these steps.

Since Spacilus Search Engine Assistant needs to "see" all search engine pages your web browser requests from the internet, there remains one last thing to be done after setup.exe has been run and before Spacilus can be used: Your web browsers proxy server settings need to be changed.

Expert users might find all the information they need at the bottom of this page.

Step-by-step instructions

Please choose your web browser:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox

Remark for people using other browsers: Chances are high that Spacilus will work with your browser, too. Setting proxy server information goes along pretty much the same lines with all browser brands, so try to take the following examples as a starting point and if that doesn't help you, a good friend with some technical experience sure will;-)

Instructions for Microsoft Internet Explorer

1. Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools and then on Internet Options to open the Internet Options dialog.

2. Click the dialogs Connections tab. Then, depending on the type of your internet connection, either click the LAN Settings button if you are not using a dial-up connection ...

3. ... or click your dial-up connections Settings button.

4. In the Settings dialogs Proxy Server section make sure the box labeled "Use a proxy server..." is checked. Please remember whether it was checked when you opened the dialog, since you will need this information in the next step. Then click the Advanced button.

5. If the "Use a proxy server..." box was checked in the previous step, please write down the proxy address and port number in the line labeled "HTTP:". Then make sure the box labeled "Use the same proxy for all protocols" is unchecked. In any case, change the proxy information to 127.0.0.1 and the port number to 10024 and close all open dialogs by clicking Ok, three times.

Important: Leave all other lines (Secure, FTP, Gopher, Socks) unchanged!

6. If you did not write down a proxy server address and port number in the previous step, please continue with step 9!

7. Locate the Spacilus system tray icon in the lower right corner of your desktop. Right-click on it and then select Settings from the context menu.

8. Make sure the box labeled "Use a proxy server" is checked. Now enter the proxy server adress and port number you wrote down in step 5 and close the dialog by clicking Ok.

Important: Please keep the proxy configuration you wrote down in a safe place, since you will need it whenever you want to uninstall Spacilus again!

9. Close all open Internet Explorer windows, then start a new one and point it to http://www.google.com. If everything went Ok, you should notice the Spacilus menu on top of the page.

10. Your are finished now! Enjoy using Spacilus Search Assistant.

Instructions for Mozilla Firefox

1. Open Firefox, click on Tools and then on Options to open the Options dialog.

2. Next, click the Connections Settings button.

3. If "Manual proxy configuration" is selected, please write down the proxy address and port number in the line labeled "HTTP Proxy:".

Important: If either "Auto detect proxy settings for..." or "Automatic proxy configuration URL:" is selected in this dialog, you will have to ask your system administrator for a manual proxy configuration before you can continue!

Then make sure the box labeled "Use the same proxy for all protocols" is unchecked. In any case, change the HTTP proxy information to 127.0.0.1 and the port number to 10024 and close all open dialogs by clicking Ok, two times.

Important: Leave all other lines (SSL, FTP, Gopher, Socks) unchanged.

4. If you did not write down a proxy server address and port number in the previous step, please continue with step 7!

5. Locate the Spacilus system tray icon in the lower right corner of your desktop. Right-click on it and then select Settings from the context menu.

7. Start a new instance of Firefox, point it to http://www.google.com and perform a web search. If everything went ok, you should notice the Spacilus menu on top of the result page.

8. Your are finished now! Enjoy using Spacilus Search Assistant.

Instructions for expert users

  • Lookup your current HTTP-proxy settings. If there is a proxy configured, make Spacilus use it.
    • Right-click the Spacilus tray icon and select Settings from the context menu. Enter the proxy configuration there. Also write down the original proxy configuration somewhere because it is needed whenever you want to uninstall Spacilus again.
  • Change your browsers HTTP-proxy settings to server 127.0.0.1 at port 10024
    • Make sure that you change the HTTP proxy only! Please leave all other proxy settings (ftp, https, etc.) as they were.
  • For some browser to accept the configuration change, you need to close them and open them again.
  • You are all set now. Open http://www.google.com and you should notice the Spacilus menu on top of the page.
